The marina is buttoned up. The working boats are in and appreciative for the dock space. It was another fantastic summer season for the memory books. Chris and I are transitioning to winter mode which includes cozy nights by the fire and early bedtimes. A direct contrast to the busyness of summer with all its social engagements and laughter but a welcoming recharge that will ready us again for the longing of summer excitement. It’s a cycle filled with gratitude and contentment that never gets old. However, when the end of summer comes and it's time for people to start putting their boats away, that transition does not settle in so easily for me. In fact, the sorrow always catches me by surprise…
It happens every year like clockwork. The season winds down when I’m not looking. It’s go go go, fun fun fun and then all of a sudden I look around and everyone is gone and I say to myself, “Wait...is it over? I’m not ready.” A wave of sadness hits me. I wallow in it for a bit until I reflect on all the heart to heart connections, extraordinary people and remarkable stories that have been packed into a few months.
So many captains, crews, owners, families and furry friends – all of them creating lasting memories for us. We hope we have done the same for them. “Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones” part of a quote I read once that has stayed with me. I think it is a reminder to live in the present and to not just appreciate the people around you but to let them know that you appreciate them.
The photos of summer are here to remind us of all the love. Even the photos without people carry a story and a memory.
Until we meet again, may the seas lie smooth before you and the memories of summer fill your heart with love.
